Speed Hockey Rules
- There
are no face-offs in SpeedHockey.
- The
puck is placed at the center dot at the beginning of each period.
The referee blows the whistle and the players race to the puck to
start the game.
- The
layout of the floor consists of a goal crease at each net.
There is also a two-point line at each end of the floor, similar to
the three-point line in basketball.
- The
goalie cannot cover the puck outside of the goal crease; doing so will
result in a penalty. However,
the goalie can play the puck outside of the crease.
- A
goal scored from outside the two-point line, without touching any other
player on the offensive team, will result in two points.
- When
the goalie freezes the puck and the whistle is blown, the offensive players
must back out beyond the two-point line.
The goalie can play the puck to his team at any time—the goalie has
to play it within five seconds after the offensive team clears the zone.
When the puck is played, the offensive team may attack the puck, even
if they did not touch up beyond the two-point line.
- At
the mite and squirt level, the opposing team may not attack the puck until
it is cleared of the two-point line.
- All
standard hockey penalties apply. When
a penalty is called, the player who receives the penalty must leave the
floor for one minute.
- The
team can put another player in for the penalized player (teams that do not
have enough players to do so will have to play short-handed for one
minute).
- The
player who was infracted upon will receive a penalty shot.
His/her teammates must then go to their own goal crease.
The opponents must line up inside the two-point line.
When the referee blows the whistle, the player can go on a
breakaway, with the opposing team chasing him/her.
The player’s teammates can also join the play.
- If
the player does not score, the puck is in play and anyone can play the
rebound.
- The
clock runs continuously except to set up for a penalty.
The clock will start again when the referee blows the whistle for the
penalty shot to start.
- At
the Mite and Peewee level, a horn will sound every two minutes to allow for
substitutions. Every player
must go to the bench either to touch up or substitute on a one-for-one
basis.
- The
referee will give the puck to the goalie that is closest to the puck to
start the play. The opposing
team must be outside of the two-point line and cannot attack the puck
until it is clear of the two-point line.
- The
clock will stop for ten seconds to allow for the teams to make the change
and for the goalie to receive the puck.
